It's not too often I find myself posting with the simple purpose of gloating about my own achievements ... but please indulge me on this occurrence, as I feel the need to share my excitement.
Last month I received an email from the editor of Australian Traveller magazine ... he had noticed some of my photos on my flickr site, and wrote to ask permission to use them.
Last week, the "Ultimate Guide to the Outback" issue was released in newsagents across the country. This issue includes "Australia's 10 Greatest Outback Journeys", and at #4 - the Canning Stock Route, featuring four of my photos!
They appear in beautiful glossy colour on pages 82 to 85 ... three roughly half a page each, and one full page. And if you look carefully near the spine (perhaps with the assistance of a magnifying glass), you should be able to spot my name!
For those of you in Australia who are interested in seeing this for yourself ... the magazine is on sale this month for $7.95. Otherwise, the article and photos (while not quite as attractive as in a glossy colour mag) can also be seen on the website.
Unfortunately this magazine doesn't pay for photos, so I am financially no richer ... but I can at least say my photos have been published in the same publication as photographer Ken Duncan!
Anyway, gloating over! Thanks for humouring me!
The mum and baby koala that visited our backyard early last month returned today!! They were back in the tree outside my window. Baby is getting much bigger, and more independent of mum. He even ventured a little higher in the tree than mum to reach the younger gum leaves at one point. So sweet!
There are loads more photos in Flickr. They were pretty active throughout the day, moving around to eat and rest as they wished. They didn't seem all that fussed by humans either ... happily moving around in front of us. Even the dog didn't scare them, which was surprising.
It's so nice to see them back again. Koala numbers are diminishing at a rather alarming rate, so it's great that these ones haven't disappeared. I'm not sure where they are now ... they might still be in the tree - they were still there when I left to go out earlier, but it's dark now and too hard to see. I hope they stick around, or at least continue to return. Lovely to see the baby growing. They might need names soon I think!
Yesterday we had a koala in our backyard. Not an entirely uncommon occurrence ... they come and go, and often I'll hear them outside my bedroom window at night. This one was special though, as it had a tiny, tiny baby! Isn't it adorable!
Free Moo cards! Act quick ... before they run out again! This time, it's with LiveJournal and Vox ... a free sample 10-pack with each. You just add Moo to your friends list or neighbourhood ... then create away!
If you have a free LJ account, you can only create text ones (but they're fun too ... I think I spent more time designing them than the photo ones). Vox you can import photos from Flickr or upload others and then create photo cards.
LJ you get the LJ logo on the cards, but Vox is completely free of advertising. And no charge at all ... not even postage. And they're so cute! I've already purchased two 100-packs through Flickr, on top of the free pack I started out with. They're so much fun!
Thanks to Sandy for sharing her discovery. :)
Today was an exciting mail delivery day! Not just one, but two packages arrived by airmail from overseas. Even one international delivery would be newsworthy in my books. But two ... how thrilling!
The first ... a brand new set of uniquely gorgeous Flickr Moo Cards ... hurrah! I'm still obsessed, and they're so lovely! I used all of my last lot up while I was travelling, so it was time for some more. And this time ... I've used lovely new photos from my recent trip. They're perfect
The second exciting delivery ... from Amazon.com. Sandy (who is far too sweet for her own good!) recently sent me an Amazon voucher ... which I put towards a DVD box set that has been on my wish list for a while. I'm a little ashamed to admit how thrilled I am to now have in my possession the entire first season of Felicity. :) Oh, and yes ... I do intend to purchase the next three seasons at some point too!
Hurrah for international mail! It can make an otherwise slow and tiresome Monday at least a little more exciting. :)
Funniest television scene ever ... Gilmore Girls, season two, episode five. Jess has just arrived in town; he's seriously messing with Luke's head; they have an argument, walk across the lake side by side, each fuming silently, and Luke casually pushes Jess in the lake. Absolutely classic. Love this show!
Meanwhile, I have now finished uploading all my travel photos ... and all have been captioned. Check them out here. The new "detail" option might make things easier ... after clicking on a set, switch to detail mode rather than thumbnails. Or slideshow them if you prefer. I will still try to share individual shots in posts in future, to highlight some of my particular favourite memories. I think there's close to 1500 photos in that lot though, so not all will be posted here!
Better run ... places to be! Seeing Narelle and baby Hannah again today ... and shopping! I love ignoring uni work. :)
I had SES tonight, and arrived pretty much on the dot of 7:15 when we start, as I usually do seeing as the depot is less than five minutes away. I took my seat amongst the numerous rows of members that were already seated, had a quick chat to friends around me, smiled hello to a few others, then looked up to the whiteboard ... to see four of my photos blown up to about 10" x 8", all framed, and ready to be hung on the wall!
I don't remember exactly which four, but all were taken within a few minutes of each other at sunrise while on the flood boat challenge weekend in May last year. So they all look something like this one ... only big! And in frames!
They look really nice. I think I should try printing enlargements of more of my photos! And so many people commented. They're going to go up on the wall at the depot. Knowing how often the depot gets redecorated, they'll probably be up there for the next twenty years. Kind of cool, I do think. Perhaps even tops one of my photos being used on the Girl Guide biscuit boxes last year! ;)
I'm having so much trouble getting into uni this year! I just can't get focussed. My mind is all over the place. I know I have assessment coming due far sooner than I care to think, but nothing is inspiring me to work on it. I've done a few readings, read through my unit outlines, sorted out what assessment I have due when ... and that's about it!
So much for the homework tasks and project plans and various other things I should have done! I've got about a billion readings that I just haven't done, or at best haven't finished. I set aside time to study, and instead of actually studying, I get sidetracked uploading photos, or replying to email, or doing any one of a huge number of typical procrastination jobs that always seem so important at the time.
And on that note, I have finally started uploading photos. Started. In that there's currently only a small number of photos in one set, which will eventually grow to a very large number of photos across about twenty sets. London to begin with! Viewable here. People photos restricted as always. There are many more photos from London, but they fitted into sets of their own, so will appear later on. These are basically the left over photos that don't fit anywhere else.
Meanwhile, I'm awfully impressed with the new Flickr options - viewing sets in detail mode is so much more convenient! The collections idea is cute too. I need to play with it more! And I love the fancy new "share" feature ... very cool! Flickr is the best. My appreciation for it continues to grow.
Anyway, time to do some real work. Hopefully reading all afternoon will make up for my poor efforts this morning. Best intentions ... I got to uni an hour before I needed to be there, having left home at the unfathomable time of 6:30am, with the brilliant plan of sitting at the café and doing my readings for this morning's class. Very studious of me, I thought.
Plans fell apart though when I arrived at the café, sat down with my yummy thick toast, pulled out my books, and discovered that in my intense drowsiness and stupidity last night I packed the wrong text book. Not only the wrong text book, but a text book that I don't even need to read for any subject this semester. So much for catching up on any work! Oops! So now, to work!
