sleep curfew and visitors

Posted by Larina at 2:07 AM on Friday, 27 August 2004 | Comments (2)

So I got a little busy. Or rather, sleep started to take priority over random bloggage. I tried to give myself a sleep curfew this week, not that it worked particularly well. I've also had visitors. Tori is staying at the moment, and Jolene was over last night and the night before. So I guess there are multiple reasons for my latest disappearance.

I'm going to Romeo & Juliet at the Globe tomorrow, with Jolene and Tori. So excited! Also going to try on my Burberry coat and jeans - Kristen's arranging to get them for me at cost price (love friends who work for fancy designer stores!). I hope they fit, especially the coat!!

Went out with the girls after work tonight. The other nannies I mean. Random last minute decision this afternoon - such a good plan. It was so much fun! We don't do it nearly often enough. So we made plans to do it many more times over the coming weeks ... yay!! Such a mixed group ... all from different countries, so many different languages spoken, but we seem to do nothing but laugh! So different without the kids too. Love it!

Had a phone call from a friend in Australia tonight ... very exciting! Don't get many calls from home, usually it's me making the calls ... which is obviously far less exciting. Watched another new ep of All Saints too, courtesy of Kristen's most recently received videos. Still loving the new doctor! I'm afraid his perfection faltered a little tonight, but Dr Jack will keep me watching for a while yet I think!

Okay, I think I'm done with random news. There must be more, but I'm tired and my bed is calling. I'm also rambling unnecessarily. It's ridiculously late! Bank holiday weekend ... no work until Tuesday! Yay!!! 'Night!

foreign Olympic viewing

I'm going to bed! Yay! Only just after midnight too ... I'm doing quite well so far this week. Well, after two nights I am at least. Mostly I think because I'm not actually trying to achieve anything. So I'm being completely unproductive, but I'm awake ... I guess life's a compromise.

Tonight I had dinner and caught up with a couple of friends from Pax ... so much fun! An Aussie and a Saffa, and Jolene came along as well ... so funny. We had a good laugh at the British commentary of the Olympics. I think we're all missing our home commentators. It's just not the same watching the Olympics in another country. Hopefully we're going to go and watch Roy & HG at the Walkabout on Saturday night ... they're apparently replaying The Dream every night during the games. Fingers crossed.

Anyway, time for bed! No more energy for random news, so I'll sleep instead! Less than four weeks until my parents arrive! Yay! 'Night all!

Scottish relaxation

Posted by Larina at 11:27 PM on Sunday, 22 August 2004 | Comments (0)

I'm home again! Actually, I was home by 6 this evening ... so nice getting home so early! I'm used to getting home really late on Sundays and having to unpack and get myself sorted for work in a rush while trying to stay awake and get an early night all at the same time - never easy.

I think this has been one of my most relaxing weekends away yet. Probably because I wasn't really trying to do the tourist type thing. I'd been to Edinburgh already, done the castle, the museum, the bus tour, etc, etc. This time I was basically just there for the festival. Comedy Friday night, Tattoo last night ... and the rest of the weekend was completely uncommitted.

I made the most of it too! Friday afternoon we shopped. ;) Princes St and George St ... great fun! We got dinner, saw the show, went home and slept. Kristen did a bus tour all day yesterday, but I slept in then (surprise, surprise) did some more shopping! Up to the Royal Mile as well, and wandered around randomly a bit. I went to the Writer's Museum, mostly because I liked the look of the building. Had lunch sitting on the grass in the sun ... it was gorgeous!

Ooh, yesterday afternoon I went back to the apartment early to get changed and chill out a bit ... turned on the tv and discovered Felicity on ITV2! So impressed. One completely random episode that I've seen a few times before anyway, but I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed that show ... it was fun!

Then I got to see Hackett get his gold for the 1500m (and the British commentators completely ignore him and focus on the guy who came third - it seems Hackett only swam so fast because he was pushed by the Brit), and the women smash all the records for the 4x 100m medley ... very cool!

Slept in again this morning, then back to the shops on the way to the train station. I bought shoes! Yay! Two pairs in fact, both from Clarks ... so I've now bought five pairs of shoes since I've been in the UK, all from Clarks - love that shop!

So silly though, I'd already tried them on yesterday but couldn't decide which ones I wanted. I went back today having decided, obviously didn't need to try them on again so just bought them ... but when I got home tonight I discovered that the sales guy screwed up. In one box, he's given me two completely different shoes. A left and a right at least, but different styles. So annoying ... I'll have to take them into a store down here and try to explain. Hmph.

Anyway, I should get to bed. I feel like I've been sleeping all weekend. A five hour train trip this afternoon sitting in the lovely warm sun ... I'm surprised I didn't sleep the entire journey! Better not waste the non-exhausted state I've finally achieved though, so bed it is. 'Night!

comedy and travels

Early night! Almost. And in the spirit of not neglecting my blog, I'm posting randomly before going to bed. I haven't forgotten about Iceland ... I still have heaps to tell about it!! Still miss Valzy and her family (especially the kids), and wish I could be back there. Still looking into going back sometime, but hoping to plan Christmas and NY first. Considering going to Prague and Vienna with Kristen and Jolene, and maybe some others. Very exciting. White Christmas! Lots of research to do first though.

Booked tickets tonight to see Jimeoin Friday night. Yay! He's on slightly later at the same venue as Danny Bhoy, so it should be a fabulous night. I also want to see Adam Hill (Go You Big Red Fire Engine!!), but the show I want to see appears to be sold out. Not sure if I can justify (or stay awake for) an 11.45 pm show. Might see what's available when we get up there.

I took Sean to the zoo today ... so much fun! Days like today make being a Nanny the best job in the world!

Okay, so not an early night. I'm not fooling anyone. I need sleep. I've got St John thing tomorrow night, then I have to pack and be at King's Cross far too early Friday morning. Five hour train trip to Edinburgh ... which basically means five hours bonus sleep the way I see it. =)

Better get to bed. 'Night all!

non-Aussie Olympics

Posted by Larina at 1:30 AM on Wednesday, 18 August 2004 | Comments (0)

You know you're too busy when you run out of time in the evening to have ice cream! I bought fancy ice cream last night (it was on special), and I still haven't even opened it. I fully intended to earlier, but somehow at this time of night, bed seems a little more important than ice cream. Sad, but true.

Meanwhile, it's far too weird trying to follow the Olympics while living in another country. It's just not right. I have to make an effort to find out how Australia's doing. The commentators never focus on the Aussies. They hardly ever interview them. They don't replay the right events in the evenings. It's depressing. I had to look online to see which events we won medals in. And we don't get The Dream. Far too depressing.

comedy in Scotland

I just booked tickets to see Danny Bhoy at the Edinburgh Fringe on Friday night. So excited!! I heard such good things about him when he was in Melbourne for the Comedy Festival a few years ago ... my friends loved him to bits. Should be fun! Yay! Sleep now. Kind of early night. Almost.

Icelandic adventures

Posted by Larina at 1:07 AM on Monday, 16 August 2004 | Comments (0)

I've just had one of the best weekends of my life! This has easily been one of my best trips away ever ... I had such an incredible time. I don't think words could quite explain how much I enjoyed it!! Not just me, Jolene and Kristen share my sentiments.

I absolutely love Iceland!!! Partly because it's such a beautiful and unique country ... it's completely unlike anywhere I've ever been before! So wild, and natural ... it's just gorgeous!! Plus, the weather was unbelievable. Everyone was talking about how gorgeous it was ... best weather in over 30 years apparently.

Mostly though, I think I enjoyed it so much because we were welcomed so warmly by Valzy's family. I love them all to bits. They were so friendly, and so much fun ... they made us feel like part of the family, and made exploring their country so much for enjoyable. We met Valzy's parents, her three sisters, her sisters' children, and her friends as well ... it was fabulous. They drove us around, took us out at night, cooked for us, taught us to speak Icelandic, introducd us to Icelandic music, and so much more!

We were so lucky to be introduced to the country by people who live there ... I think the experience was so much more special as a result. We've already decided that we want to go back! There's so much more to see, and I'm missing them all already! I think I want to spend more time with them as much as I do exploring the rest of the country. I'll be checking flights to Reykjavic tomorrow night I think!

Now, I need sleep though. Haven't had too much over the weekend, so I'm more than a little exhausted. Delays getting home from the airport too, so it's far later than expected. I intend to write much more about the Icelandic adventure ... I have notes jotted down, so I'll try to expand a little more sometime soon. Until then, good night!

tomorrow ...

Posted by Larina at 1:33 AM on Thursday, 12 August 2004 | Comments (2)

My suspicions of course were justified ... I think I can call this a late night. Packing really doesn't take me that long. In fact, I barely spent any time actually packing. It's all the distractions and in built need to procrastinate. I was actually considering playing with a new layout for a short while ... then realised how insane that would be, so hopefully my creative inspiration will return next week.

Anyway, about to curl up in bed. Tomorrow, I fly to Iceland!! I love how completely random and adventurous that sounds. Tomorrow I also get to see Valzy ... I've missed her since she left. And tomorrow I'm also going to a 2nd Birthday Party - how much fun!? Have a great weekend!! 'Night!

memories and videos

Posted by Larina at 9:49 PM on Wednesday, 11 August 2004 | Comments (0)

Random story. Really random in fact. Someone called me Larina-lou on the weekend! I haven't been called that in such a long time! It made me all homesick and reminiscent. That's a nickname I had at work ... noone else has ever used it other than MGV people. Then, he progressed to Lou-lou ... which I used to get on occasion as well. The memories!

Meanwhile, funny story. One of the videos Kristen had sent over from home got broken on the way over ... we couldn't rewind it. Rather than just give up though, we figured there had to be a way to rescue to the five hours worth of Aussie tv on the tape. Tried winding it back manually, but it didn't work ... the tape was really broken. So Kristen pulled it apart, pulled another video apart, and transferred the actual tape into the new case, and with a little teamwork we successfully put it all back together. And it worked!!! We can now watch the video. ;) So impressed.

Okay, must start packing. Flying to Iceland tomorrow! Yay! I'm going to the airport straight from work, so I need to be all packed and ready to go first thing tomorrow. Need sleep, but I have a sneaking suspicion it may end up being another late night. In brighter news, the weather in Iceland is gorgeous at the moment!

off to dream

Posted by Larina at 11:35 PM on Tuesday, 10 August 2004 | Comments (0)

So in an attempt to return to some form of regular posting, I thought I better make a quick appearance tonight. Short posts every night are surely better than random long posts once in a blue moon. I'm about to get into bed though, so by quick, I really do mean quick.

I've had the most unproductive evening. I had only planned to achieve one thing tonight, and I didn't even manage that! I did book tickets for my parents and I to see The Lion King though, which is rather exciting! And I also spent a fairly decent amount of time on the phone chatting to a friend from St John. I replied to some email, but only new ones ... so my inbox is still completely out of control. Oops. One day soon I'll get it sorted, hopefully.

Hmm, like I said ... unproductive evening. Oh well, all won't be lost if I at least get to bed early. So I'm going to say good night! I've been having the most ridiculously detailed and vivid dreams lately, so who knows what I've got to look forward to tonight.

late night catch up

Posted by Larina at 12:44 AM on Tuesday, 10 August 2004 | Comments (0)

Silence for over a week ... oops! Unintended, I swear. But I guess unavoidable at the same time. No decent excuse though ... just busy. It seemed like all week, whenever I actually had a minute to post anything it was far too late and my bed was a far more logical option. Even now I should probably be considering an early night, but I was feeling bad for my poor, neglected blog.

So what's happened since August 1st? There was the Michael Ball concert ... fabulous afternoon. Beautiful music from a wonderful collection of shows. Plenty of Les Mis, which for some reason always has me close to tears. Michael McCarthy was there, along with a few others who were equally impressive. The Michael Ball fans were more than a little scary, but ignoring them, I couldn't really fault the afternoon. Late night though - driving back through London at around midnight was interesting, especially considering it was my first time driving in London. Made it home though, and even got some sleep before work the next day.

Wednesday was also a fun day. National Playday ... they had stuff going on at Trafalgar Square, so I took Sean in. Some of his friends went too ... we had a great time. Love getting out and doing something different, as does Sean. Splashing around in the fountains at Traf Sq was rather memorable ... I ended up so ridiculously wet, but it was a hot day so rather lovely.

Hmm what else? St John duty at Brighton. A weekend away. It was fun! Didn't actually get to see the sea, but had a good time regardless. Love my division, everyone's so nice. We need to do more weekends away! But preferably next time we'll go somewhere with proper beds - the stretcher wasn't particularly comfortable I'm afraid.

Okay, now it really is getting late. I've been typing while watching tv, which always slows the process down considerably. Kristen has videos sent over from home, so I've been catching up on some Aussie tv. Quite entertaining ... stuff I haven't seen and barely thought about for basically a year. I hadn't really missed it to be honest, but I must confess, it's fun to see what's going on. I just saw Mt Thomas Police Station get blown up. Then Nick returned! Oh, and I'm loving the new doctor on All Saints too!!

What other random last minute news should I share? I bought a new digital camera on Sunday! Canon Ixus 430 ... I love it!! Still learning what it can do and stuff, but totally impressed so far. I'll get to play properly in Iceland on the weekend.

Ooh, one last thing to tell! I finally got my photo album sorted. It's deliberately not linked to anywhere ... but if you're interested, let me know and I'll send you the address.

Okay, now my bed definitely needs me. I sure I had time to post when I started typing this! So much for the early night. Oops. 'Night!!

concerts, gardens and sunshine

Posted by Larina at 12:34 AM on Sunday, 1 August 2004 | Comments (0)

I want a new layout. As much as I love Nemo, I'm so over this one. I need something fresh, and a little more interesting. Of course, that requires spare time to actually do something about it ... something which I'm rather lacking at the moment. Perhaps I'll take advantage of my next desire to procrastinate by playing with something different.

Meanwhile, it's late, and once again I have very little to say. I went to the movies yesterday with Jolene, and saw The Prince and Me. Cute, predictable, entertaining ... but nothing too special. Enjoyed it all the same though. Then went shopping and had lunch at Kensington Gardens. Fun.

Last night I had St John, then went to a flat warming. Got home ridiculously late and then decided to call home - spoke to my parents until close to 3 in the morning. Very wise. Completely wrecked today because I slept too late as a result and that never works for me. I should have known to get up normal time, despite how little sleep I would have got. Oh well. I'm now wide awake of course, and feeling much better than I was earlier this evening.

Anyway, regardless of this sudden lack of sleepiness, I need to get to bed. Kristen and I are going to Kent tomorrow, to see Michael Ball and a rather exciting selection of West End performers in an outdoor concert. Should be fun. Especially considering the gorgeous weather we've been having.
