questionably un-Australian

Posted by Larina at 1:10 PM on Saturday, 28 June 2003 | Comments (0)

I have to share one of the discussions they had on The Glass House last night. It was regarding Lleyton Hewitt, and I think it pretty much summed up our rather divided opinion of the guy. I could definitely relate to the opposing views anyway.

The discussion is between Corinne Grant, Dave Hughes, Wil Anderson and fashion chick Mia Freedman. Please excuse the language, I'm quoting directly ...

Mia: Is it un-Australian of me to have not beed sad when he got knocked out of Wimbledon this week?
Corinne: No, bloody about time the arrogant little so-&-so!
Dave: Aww ... come on ... hey!
Corinne: No!
Dave: He's a bloody Aussie. He's number one player in the world.
Corinne: And he's a cocky little shit!
Wil: Yeah, but he's our cocky little shit!

I think Wil's nailed it right there ;). They then went on to discuss his Sorbent ad campaign ....

Mia: You just look at his face now and just think ... bog roll.
Wil: You really do though, every time ... every time you see him now you think of those toilet paper ads.
Mia: Yeah, like, he was getting some bad advice. I don't, you know, can you imagine someone pitching him, "Ooh Lleyton, we've got this great commercial .... and you're doing a poo ... and then .... your mum ... has to get you more toilet paper!
Dave: Yeah, but ...
Corinne: I reckon toilet paper was the perfect vehicle for a man who's an asshole and who gives me the shits!

Hehe, very funny people!

no pointy things

Posted by Larina at 12:04 AM on Saturday, 28 June 2003 | Comments (0)

I'm on holidays! Well, technically I'm on holidays ... but my weekend is already full, so it doesn't feel like it yet. Starting Monday I'll finally have some free time again though! Time hopefully to do all the things which need to be done before I leave ... in less than eight weeks!

Of course, the arrival of holidays also means I've finished my job =(. I think this has been the most enjoyable job I've ever had ... it was so much fun! I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and I'm going to miss the kids heaps! Luckily I'll still see them a little next term when I help out in the classroom ... although it won't really be the same.

After five weeks though, I'm positive teaching is what I want to do! Not entirely sure which grade ... they were all such great kids! But I'll be back at uni studying education as soon as I get home I think! I can't wait to learn all about it, and understand all the background stuff involved in teaching.

Cute story from today ... I have to share! From one of the little Year 1 boys, he's fantastic! Some of the girls were wishing me a happy holiday this afternoon, and he noticed. So, joining in, he came up and said to me, "I hope your holiday isn't dangerous!" And he said it with such seriousness too! Then he emphasised his point by adding, "I hope there aren't any pointy things!". With complete sincerity ... he really meant it! It was so sweet, and so hard not to laugh! Awww.

Meanwhile, Harry Potter update ... I'm successfully sticking to my plan to make the highly anticipated story last! I've read only eight chapters so far ... 138 of the 766 pages. Quite impressive I think, considering how many people around me are reading it also, and how many have already finished it! I'm committed to making it last though ... over two years of anticipation, I don't want it to be over too quickly.

Of course, this endeavour has been helped along quite well by the fact that I've hardly been home, and I've therefore had very little time to actually read. Although it also means I'm having to work extra hard at avoiding spoilers! Not easy considering how many people around the world are reading it right now, but so far I've been successful. If I seem a little distant and out of touch for the time being though, this is probably partially to blame ;).

Ohh, cute Harry Potter story I've been meaning to share ... last Saturday in the city, not long after 9.01am, we were standing in the mall talking and this little boy walked past. He couldn't have been more than about 8 or 9 ... and he had his book open already, silently reading and fully absorbed in the story, with his mum directly behind him holding his shoulders and directing him so he could walk safely through the crowds without looking up from his book! It was gorgeous!

Anyway, I must get some sleep. Busy weekend, and I'm awfully tired! Haven't read yet today either, so Harry is definitely calling me!

birthday fun

Posted by Larina at 11:19 PM on Monday, 23 June 2003 | Comments (6)

I have just had the most insane birthday ever! Today was the first time in all my 23 years that I've had to work on my birthday ... and it was crazy! I left home at 7.30 this morning, returned briefly at around 6.30 this evening, then finally arrived home for good at about 9pm! And despite the exhaustion, it was a fantastic day!

I had happy birthday sung to me by two separate groups of kids, I got text messages and calls and birthday wishes all day long, I got so many extra hugs from so many different kids, I had cake three times, I found a little time to read more Harry Potter, I got packages in the mail, and I just discovered even more wishes arriving by email =).

Ohh, and yesterday I got the best card ever from the crew in the Starlight ER!! Hand made especially, and so funny! I'll have to take a photo and show it off ... it's just gorgeous. I love it!

Meanwhile, I've been so incredibly busy, I haven't even had a chance to open my pressies ... so they're all still awaiting me as I type! Time to open them I think, then get some sleep =).

Harry Potter mania

Posted by Larina at 8:47 PM on Sunday, 22 June 2003 | Comments (1)

It's Sunday night already, and I'm yet to share my Harry Potter mania experience! I've been so busy since, I haven't had a chance. Although my plan to pace myself whilst reading is totally working ... I've only read two chapters so far! Mainly due to the fact that I've hardly been home all weekend ;).

Anyway, I've got my copy of Harry Potter!! Very exciting! It was such a crazy experience. I arrived at Borders in time for the doors to open at 7am ... and there were people camped out! They'd brought chairs and blankets and everything! So funny, and slightly pathetic ;). Oh, and on the drive into the city, I passed people waiting at bus stops dressed in colourful robes and carrying broomsticks! I wasn't that keen ... but my receipt does say 7.01am ;).

So after pre-purchasing, I met a couple of friends and we left to get pancakes for breakfast - love the 24 hour Pancake Parlour! - then we returned just before 9am to collect our books. The store was insanely crowded ... tv cameras and a radio broadcast happening, kids and adults alike dressed up, and all the staff were in cloaks. It was crazy!

Ohh, and then the countdown started ... the same one which I'm sure was experienced around the world at the exact same moment. I later discovered, whilst watching the news last night, that we managed to position ourselves conveniently within the camera shot ... yes, we were on the Harry Potter news item on Channel 9! Hehe, how funny.

Anyway, we emerged less then ten minutes later with our very own copies, appropriately packaged in a Bloomsbury bag which announced to the world that "I bought my copy of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on 21st June 2003" ... love it!

the Harry countdown

Stupid winter! I've been coughing so much I've bruised my ribs. So unimpressed! Now not only does the coughing hurt my throat and keep me awake, but it also causes severe pain in my chest. Hmph.

Meanwhile, less than 36 hours until Harry Potter!! I think I may even be more excited than all the kids at school ;). The suspense is almost painful. I've come to the decision that I'll have to pace myself, in order to avoid reading the entire book in one session ... after waiting this long, that would be far too depressing.

Ohh, so I'm spoiler free until I advise otherwise! No giving away anything even vaguely relating to the plot of Order of the Phoenix, or I'll be very cranky! Remember, spoiler warnings are very much appreciated!

In related news, I finally decided tonight that I should really check out the pre-ordering idea ... only it seems all the stores near here have already over booked and aren't taking any more orders. Hmph. One guy even offered to add me to a list for the next shipment in two weeks time ... sure, because I'll be waiting that long *rolls eyes*.

Thankfully Borders are far more sensible and have placed a much more appropriately-sized order. So it seems I'll be making a trip to Borders first thing Saturday =). Yay! I'm rather excited now, in a tragic kind of way. It's going to be so hyped up and over the top ... the store is opening 2 hours early to pre-sell tickets for the books which can then be collected from 9.01am! So crazy, but no doubt a memorable day is in store.

football fun and dramas

Posted by Larina at 10:48 PM on Wednesday, 18 June 2003 | Comments (1)

I've decided I need to become more familiar with the English Football scene. I can't really live in the country and not understand the competition. It's not unlike when I moved to Melbourne, and suddenly had to name an AFL team to support. Besides, I'm quite a fan of soccer in general ... it's a fantastic game to watch!

So I need to figure out who all the teams are ... who plays for who, who plays better than who, and ultimately who to support. I'm familiar with some of the better known teams and players already, but there's plenty more to check out! Must consider where all the Aussies are playing too!

Meanwhile, I've picked a great night to start investigating, with Beckham all over the news! Oh, and Aussie star Kewell in talks with a new team too. Oh well, it's all fun, and a little exciting!

hugh ... finally

A new layout! As you can see =). I nearly forgot to comment on it, oops! I created it over the weekend when I had no internet access, and just got the chance to install it tonight. Featuring Hugh! A very young Hugh infact. The Hugh I fell in love with so many years ago.

I'm not sure where this picture came from originally, or even how old it is exactly. It's at least 5 years old, probably older I think. I rediscovered it a few days ago while searching through some really old files on another computer ... quite an exciting find really! Heaps of old photos and articles I'd completely forgotten about.

Anyway, this was the result =). It's about time I had a layout featuring Hugh! Hope you all like it! Any problems, crazy mac issues, broken links, etc please let me know =). Meanwhile, take care and good night!

an unsettling disconnection

Posted by Larina at 10:39 PM on Monday, 16 June 2003 | Comments (2)

Yay! I'm back, and once again connected to the world! We've had computer dramas. Not impressed. Began with network issues, which were hassle enough, but then our modem died as well. And of course, the modem had to die at the beginning of the weekend, when we couldn't do anything about it. Ohh, and today, when we finally could do something, the modem miraculously started working again. So bizarre, and so frustrating.

Anyway ... I've returned =). With masses of email to catch up on, and countless updates also required. I shall endeavour to get on top of it all someday soon, but no guarantees, as my time is at a bit of a premium at the moment. Just over 9 weeks before I fly to London! Yay!!

In other news, hmm, what else do I have to share? Only two more weeks left at school =(. I'm going to miss working there! It's been so much fun! Even the Year 2 kids, who seem to love trying my patience, have very quickly wormed their way into my heart. They're all gorgeous, really. Possible excursion next week, and maybe a disco for end of term break up. Should be fun!

Ohh, I know! I've got accomodation booked in London for 8 nights when I first arrive, so I'm looking for any suggestions as to what I should endeavour to see or do while I'm there! I'm not sure whether I'll be staying in London after that, or perhaps moving out of the city ... so it may be my best opportunity to be a tourist for a little while at least.

Anyway, it's late, and although I'm sure there were other things I was going to mention, I can't seem to think of anything ... so it shall all have to wait for another time!

hello big fancy trophy

Posted by Larina at 9:54 PM on Tuesday, 10 June 2003 | Comments (4)

Hmmm, don't be mislead by the title. It means nothing. It's just Tuesday night, so I'm randomly quoting Gilmore Girls. Yay! I'm going to miss that show =(. Tonight was the last ep for a while, and I don't know if I'm going to be here when it comes back. That's way too depressing. Please, someone tell me that it screens regularly in the UK!!!! Please!

Meanwhile, I discovered a few weeks ago that there are Gilmore Girls books!! Four of them in fact. I'm so intrigued. Obviously I'm going to have to read them one day, preferably soonish! They're no doubt aimed at a much younger demographic, but that's never stopped me before! And one of them is written by Amy Sherman-Palladino! Yay!

Anyway, moving on from the brilliance of Gilmore Girls. Yes, I'm in a strange, sleep-deprived mood ... forgive me. Everyone's been asking me about the Superhero party ... it was so much fun! In a strange, muted kind of way. Imagine ... no voice therefore no talking, plus Rogue's trademark long black gloves ... I couldn't even clap to gain attention! Despite the silence though, it was fantastic night! Yet to find out how much was raised for Starlight, but we all had heaps of fun. Photos available for viewing on request.

Oh, and yes, I did venture out in the cold at night, against doctor's orders to rest and stay warm. I didn't do anything else for the rest of the weekend though, and my ticket was already purchased, so I believe I'm justified! And I'm happy to report, my voice has now finally decided to return =).

Another random Gilmore Girls quote before I go. Not from tonight's ep, that would be logical. This is from a few weeks ago ... I just found it scribbled on a scrap of paper next to my computer. Lorelai discussing the drama of being asked out by Kirk.

Rory: You could tell him you're involved with someone.
Lorelai: Yeah, because my current karma is so great in that area I can really afford to jinx it with that kind of lie. No!

a mute Rogue

Posted by Larina at 11:50 PM on Friday, 6 June 2003 | Comments (4)

So much for my voice returning quickly ... it appears to have decided to run even further away. I've spent the evening communicating with my family with the assistance of a notebook and pen. Very frustrating. I'm not usually an overly quiet person, so this lack of ability to talk is rather unsettling. Highly amusing for those around me, I'm sure, but I can't say I'm enjoying it too much.

Meanwhile though, the Superhero fundraiser for Starlight is tomorrow night! My ticket is purchased, so I'll be going with or without my voice. It's too bad Rogue's not a mute ;). I've got my costume basically sorted though. I have long black gloves, a thin black scarf, a suitable Rogue-ish outfit, and some temporary hair colour.

I'm seriously considering just adding the white streak though, and sticking with my natural red elsewhere. It won't be right, but Charlie was rather concerned when I mentioned dying my hair black ... "Don't you remember when Anne dyed her hair green?". She makes a good point really. And the effect will surely be the same. Hmm, we'll see tomorrow night.

Thanks for the log idea Anna, I love it! Actually, I think I forgot to mention another cute story from a couple of months ago. Before I started working there, I arrived at the end of lunch one day to help with maths. One of the little Year 1 boys (who, at the time, I'd never even spoken to before) came up to me and just randomly announced, "I'm not 5 anymore!". That's all he said. It was his way of telling me that it was his 6th birthday ;). So cute!

where's my voice?

Posted by Larina at 10:16 PM on Thursday, 5 June 2003 | Comments (2)

Cute story, stemming from the rather annoying fact that I'm losing my voice. Nasty cold, hmph. Anyway, at school this morning, it was rather obvious that my voice was kind of disappearing (read almost gone). So one of the little Year 2 boys asked me, "Where's your voice gone?". I told him it had run away and deserted me. Then he asked me, "When is it coming back?" ;). How cute is that? Meanwhile, I hope it decides to return soon ... I'm missing it!

Avril rocks!

Posted by Larina at 11:01 PM on Wednesday, 4 June 2003 | Comments (3)

My impression of Avril Lavigne has improved so much! I never really had an opinion of her either way. She has an unusual attitude, and I certainly find the "non-manufactured" claim a little amusing, but I don't mind her music *shrugs*.

However, we had some exciting news last week! A few months ago Captain Starlight and Starbright decided to invite her to visit the Starlight ER. They heard she was touring, and thought it was worth a try. So we had all the kids write letters to her asking her to come, and they did up a great package to send over to her.

I thought very little of it, until Sunday - when I found out that she accepted the invitation!! She was in Brisbane today, with her concert on tonight. And while here, she spared about 45 minutes this afternoon to visit the Starlight ER!

I'm so impressed! I went in after school today, and it was really quite exciting! The room was packed, and all the kids were getting autographs and photos and so forth. It was so nice to see a celebrity with her success and popularity finding time for some sick kids. She really impressed me!

PS Thanks for the clarification regarding Gilmore Girls Kase! That makes far more sense =).

take the deviled eggs

Posted by Larina at 10:08 PM on Tuesday, 3 June 2003 | Comments (4)

I think if moving to Stars Hollow seems unlikely, I'd probably settle for attending a Stars Hollow Town Meeting. Really, how entertaining would that be? I'm sure I'd laugh myself silly, but it would be fun! They're all so fantastic!

Time is once again escaping me. I worked out that I'll be working 52 hours this week, and every single minute of those 52 hours will be with children. I think my exhaustion is quite justified really. On top of that will be 2 hours at Girl Guides and 3 hours at Starlight. Good thing I love kids. Many seem to think I'm insane. Hmmm.

Anyway, I must sleep. Seem to be developing rather strong symptoms of an annoying cold, no doubt picked up from one child or another. Hmph.

Before I go, quote from Gilmore Girls last week:

Rory (reading letter from Dwight): 'First of all, thank you for this very kind favour you are doing me. I still can't believe that any one person would be so kind to someone they'd just met.'
Lorelai: Yeah, apparently Dwight's last home was Oz, and not as in "The Wizard Of ..."

Oz as in where? What is she implying? Should I be mildly offended? Or am I completely missing something? Probably.

Anyway, bed time =). Good night!
